In their article, "Charter Schools in Eight States: Effects on Achievement, Attainment, Integration, and Competition,"Ron Zimmer, Brian Gill, Kevin Booker, Stephane Lavertu, Ti, Sass, and John White address the topic of charter schools and debate their benefits. In order to conduct their study they examined eight different states and looked into the test scores, attendance, attitudes, and other aspects that yield academic success. Charter schools are publicly funded schools that operate outside the direct control of local school districts. These charter schools are essentially in control of their curriculum, instruction, and operations. The students choose to attend these schools instead of attending a school based on location.
